Making Tax Digital (MTD) Services

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how sole traders and landlords report to HMRC. Instead of one return a year, you keep digital records and send quarterly updates, followed by a final declaration after the tax year ends.

Who needs to join

  • From 6 April 2026: qualifying income over £50,000
  • From 6 April 2027: qualifying income over £30,000
  • From 6 April 2028: qualifying income over £20,000

Qualifying income is your combined self-employment turnover and property income before expenses.

How we help

  • Check whether and when MTD applies to you
  • Choose and set up HMRC-recognised software, or bridging software for spreadsheets
  • Move your existing records across
  • Prepare and submit each quarterly update
  • Complete your final declaration at year end

Penalties

HMRC uses a points-based system for late submissions. For the 2026–27 tax year, late quarterly updates will not attract penalty points, but the final declaration deadline still applies. Getting set up early means you are not learning new software against a deadline.
